The Phantom Menace
NATALIE PORTMAN
When you see Natalie Portman, the teen queen of the planetNaboo, in
full Star Wars drag (top left), it's hard to believe her claim: I
dress very conservatively. Natalie even asserts her mother wished
she'd adopt a more "out-going" style. Usually sporting skirts to the
knee, three-quarter sleeves and little coats," Portman shocked the
world when she appeared topless on a St Bart’s beach in late January
(her fab pair at top right). Hard to believe these topless candids
(see facing page) are of the same girl who initially rejected her role
in last year's Anywhere But Here because of the partially nudity in
one scene. "I was 16 at the time, and I just wasn't ready to do
something like that," Portman offers. "I didn’t want to be in a
position where the film comes out, and I’m embarrassed because my
friends are seeing me have sex on screen. The film's star, Susan
Sarandon (with Portman, above left) supposedly heard Portman passed on
the role and so she decided to jump ship too. Director Wayne Wang
graciously tamed down the sex scene to bring Portman back on board.
"When you are that young, it's just not something you really want to
do," Natalie explains. "When you are 16, if you don't have guidance
from your parents, it can be really glamorous to be in a film, even at
the cost of having to be nude or pretending to have sex, because you
really don’t think about the consequences. So it's just kind of unfair
to put someone that young in that position." Luckily, Natalie was 18
when the St. Bart's spree occurred - and she put herself into that
position! (and what a position it is, facing top). Sometimes life's a
beach, Natalie (but in Sleuth's case - the Force was with us!). After
all, she only said: "I wasn't ready to do (nudity) on screen.-
DOWN TO EARTH
Born: Natalie ?
June 9, 1981
Jerusalem, IsraelThe question mark after her first name (above), refers to young
Natalie’s double life" as actress and serious student. Portman is a
privacy-protect-ing stage name actually her grandmother’s maiden name
enabling Natalie to continue studies at her local public high school.
According to one of Natalie’s teachers: In a class-room you wouldn’t
pick her out as the movie star. Supposedly, the knock-out (facing
bottom left) down-plays her sultry looks beneath baggy sweaters and
jeans, rarely wearing make-up. I love my life making movies, Portman
explains, but I also love my life as a student. I try to keep them
separate as much as possible. Natalie now attends presti-gious Harvard
University and is considering becoming a doctor just like her dear
old dad.One of my favorite Internet rumors totally false was that George had
written a nude scene for Natalie, Star Wars producer Rick McCallum
told Entertainment Weekly. Nude?, the writer quipped, Betting her into
the costumes was difficult enough. Above: but getting her out was even
harder. Sexy Natalie teased tourists earlier this week when she toyed
with going topless on the beach at St. Barts then kept her top on,
reported the British Sun early on in her St. Bart’s holiday. But the
sequel was worth the wait as she finally decided to flaunt her curves.
An eyewitness to the topless session sighed: She looked amazing.Supposedly, Lucas isn’t angered by Internet rumors that appear on the
more than 1800 unofficial Web sites devoted to Star Wars {Sleuth
counted scores of Portman web shrines there’s even a Natalie
Portman’s Top 20 Sites" listing}. George understands that fans love to
speculate, said Lucasfilm’s Lynne Hales. The only thing that would
bother him is pictures from the paparazzi. Don’t Look George!-
Anxious to avoid the sort of unwanted sexual attention Jodie Foster
and Brooke Shields suffered, reads one Portman profile, she has been
careful to avoid any sex scenes on screen {was a sexual tension in her
relationship with Jean Reno in ’94’s The Professional, facing upper
left} Above: Carefree and topless! Knowing her views on nudity, an
interviewer needled Natalie: If George Lucas wrote a hot ‘n’ heavy
tryst between Queen Amidala and Anakin SkywaIker, would she do it?!
Portman frowns: Somehow, I don’t think they are going to require that
of me in either of the two Star Wars I have left to do. I know I have
to conceive Luke somewhere down the line, but I think George will be
able to handle that subject without putting any bumping and grinding
in it."
